Sulfuric Fire Fishing-2019 reddot award-brands & communication design
Sulfuric Fire Fishing is a traditional fishing method developed by Taiwan’s indigenous people. This technique involves using bright sulfuric flames at night to attract sardines. In the past, due to the lack of refrigeration, the fish were immediately processed into fish sauce and other preserved foodstuffs. At its peak, around 300 fishing vessels operated using this method, but today, only four remain, making it a vanishing yet significant cultural heritage.
For this fish sauce’s corporate design, the packaging aims to commemorate and preserve this unique fishing tradition. The gold accents on a dark grey background symbolize the shimmering light of the sulfuric fire against the dark night, evoking the time when fishermen worked tirelessly under the stars.
This design not only honors the history and resilience of the fishing community but also gives the product a premium and timeless aesthetic.
In 2019, this design was recognized and nominated for the prestigious Red Dot Award in Germany, further affirming its outstanding visual and cultural representation.
